Detention Center Release Routes
Wake County Detention Center is the Sheriff's adult county jail on Hammond Road. A person may leave after posting bond, receiving an unsecured or other court-ordered release, having charges dismissed, or completing the custodial part of a local sentence. Those events may produce a community exit if no other valid charge, warrant, or hold remains. The criminal case can stay open after a bond release. Release from the building therefore does not by itself mean acquittal, dismissal, or the end of every court obligation.
Another departure may be a transfer. Movement to the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center, an NCDAC prison, another county jail, federal custody, or immigration custody is continued confinement under a different custodian. The Wake release event should name the destination or receiving authority. If it does not, ask specifically whether the recorded departure was a community release or an agency transfer. That one distinction is more reliable than trying to interpret an absent roster result.

Confirm a Detention Center Release
The live Wake inmate and arrest inquiry can provide a current booking lead, but it is not a certified release archive. A name may disappear because of release, transfer, data timing, an identity mismatch, or an expunction-related change. - Match the person carefully with full name, aliases, date of birth, booking number, or case number. Do not rely on a name alone.
- Check the Wake inquiry only for a current local custody lead. Save the relevant booking or case identifier, not a conclusion based on absence.
- Call Wake County Detention Center at 919-773-7930 and ask whether the person was released to the community or transferred to another custodian.
- Request the existing admission and release event through the Wake County public-records portal. Ask for release date and time, authority or reason, releasing facility, and destination.
- Compare the jail event with the public Wake criminal case through the court portal or clerk. If NCDAC received the person, use the state offender record instead.
Important: A court order explains why release could occur. Only the custody event shows whether another hold or receiving agency prevented a community exit.

Wake Detention Release Record Fields
A useful request identifies the record fields that answer the custody question. Wake County need not create a custom report, but it can respond about existing records subject to public-record, investigatory, security, personal, sealed, and expungement limits. Ask for enough detail to connect the correct booking to the correct exit. A release date by itself may still hide whether the destination was the street, another jail, or state custody.

North Carolina criminal-investigation records have special treatment under N.C.G.S. ยง 132-1.4. Public arrest facts, a retained booking image, and an agency's proactive web publication are not identical access questions. If part of a request is denied, ask the custodian to identify the legal basis. Expunged or sealed material must not be reconstructed from an old copy.
Detention Transfers Versus Releases
Wake's two adult detention locations are parts of one county system. A move between Hammond Road and the downtown Public Safety Center changes the building, not the person's freedom status. The same rule applies when Wake turns a person over to NCDAC after judgment. NCDAC's Offender Public Information search can then show state admission, incarceration history, status, and later release information. It expressly serves state corrections records rather than county jail records.

- The person leaves confinement without another custodian taking control, though court duties or pretrial conditions may continue.
- Transfer
- One agency or facility delivers the person to another custodian. It is not a release to the community.
- Detainer or hold
- A notice or legal basis that may require custody for another agency after the local matter would otherwise allow release.
- Discharge
- The end of the relevant sentence or supervision status, which is different from merely leaving the county jail.
A Wake court disposition is a useful companion record. It may show bond, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or a later order. Yet it cannot establish the precise door-exit time, and it may not reveal a separate hold. Compare it with the Sheriff's event before treating the person as released.
Note: A pretrial monitoring condition may permit a jail exit while the criminal case remains open and is not probation or parole.
Hammond Road Jail Expansion
Wake's Hammond Road complex was developed under a 1999 master plan. Official planning materials identify Phase 1 completion in 2005 and Phase 2 in 2012. The two adult county detention locations had a combined rated capacity of 1,574 in February 2026 Board material, with 1,094 assigned to Hammond Road and 480 to the Public Safety Center. Those are capacity figures, not a count of people released, booked, or held on a given day.
Current planning describes a third phase of roughly 120,000 square feet and about 448 maximum-security beds while the active facility continues operating. February 2026 material projected annex work completion in December 2026 and occupancy after a transition period in spring 2027. These dates are projections. Construction does not prove that a roster changed, that a person moved, or that Wake adopted a new release policy. For an individual case, the detention event remains the controlling source.
After a Hammond Road Release
No reviewed official jail page states a fixed release exit, waiting location, release hour, or jail-provided ride. Families should confirm the person's actual release status before traveling, then call the facility for current arrival and waiting instructions. Do not estimate a pickup time from the court calendar. Processing, paperwork, another charge, a warrant, or a receiving-custodian check can affect when a legally authorized release becomes a physical departure.
Public transit serves the broader Hammond and Chapanoke area. GoRaleigh service is nearby, but it is not transportation furnished by the jail. Check the current stop, walking path, service time, fare, and accessibility before relying on it. A route that appears close on a map may not offer a safe or permitted walk from the actual exit. The release record answers whether the person left custody; transit information only helps plan what happens afterward.
